I'm a professional bike fitter in Topsham, in Exeter, in Devon, in the UK, and I am finally coming online to talk about bike fitting stuff for the first time today&mdash;to talk about something absolutely amazing that I have been able to be part of working with and played a small part in helping develop in some way, just through some testing.</p>
<p>I really want to challenge you guys to think of this thing not as an item of clothing, but as a bike component&mdash; to think that you can't ride your bike without it, and that this specific component is going to make you feel more connected with your bike. It's going to make you feel like you are able to output more power through your bike, it's going to provide comfort to you, and what I want to introduce to you today is the most wonderful, completely custom-designed shoe by Lore: the LoreThree.</p>
<p>Now, this shoe here is my shoe&mdash;it's my left foot shoe. The right is just behind the camera. But what's special about this, if you don't know, is that it starts off with a scan of your foot. So you come into the bike fit studio, or you can use an app&mdash;but I prefer people coming into the studio so we can make sure we get the posture right. You do a full 3D scan of your foot, and then you're sent off to Lore, who then create the shell of the shoe and the base plate of the shoe in 3D renders, and then 3D print carbon fiber and a TPU upper to match the shape of your foot.</p>
<p>And what that does is it just provides this most wonderful, comfortable shoe that matches your foot one-to-one, taking into consideration all the little individual items of your foot between left and right&mdash;lengths, shapes, all the different bone structures&mdash;and they create this wonderful shoe.</p>
<p>And what this does is, when you put it on, it not only feels comfortable but provides you with this absolutely insane level of transfer of the power that you generate as a cyclist to your bike. So riding this is unlike anything I have ever ridden before in my cycling career. It is just phenomenal.</p>
<p>It is easily probably the biggest upgrade you could make to your bike to make you go faster, to feel more connected with your bike, and to have a better cycling experience. It's sort of an unbelievable bit of technology and custom, and I want to tell you all about it."</p>

Heel Stability

<p>Last week, Colby Pearce conducted a controlled, back-to-back field test in Boulder: three maximal hill efforts in Lore Watts, three in custom-modified Bonts, alternating each rep.&nbsp;</p>
<p>Across successive efforts, <strong>Lore output trended upward</strong>.<br />Across successive efforts, <strong>Bont output trended downward</strong>.</p>
<p>Under fatigue, the difference widened.</p>
<p>This suggests not simply higher peak performance, but <strong>greater repeatability and resilience-</strong>&nbsp;the ability to reproduce high force outputs without degradation. In competitive settings, that quality often matters more than a single maximal number.</p>
<p>Subjectively, Colby reported a more complete connection through the pedal stroke in Lore. Power captured across a broader range of motion, particularly under load. The data reflected that impression.</p>
<p>The early signal is clear:</p>
<p><b>Performance is not only about peak output.</b><br /><b>It is about how well power endures.</b></p>

<h2 data-start="311" data-end="363">Shoe test: Lore vs. Bont (hill reps + power data)</h2>
<p data-start="365" data-end="478">It&rsquo;s a lovely day in Boulder and I&rsquo;m going to do some shoe testing today. I&rsquo;m going to do Lore versus Bont shoes.</p>
<p data-start="480" data-end="869">Here&rsquo;s the plan: I&rsquo;m going to get warmed up in my Lores (the Watts), then do a one-minute effort ripping up a hill. Then I&rsquo;m going to come home and put on my custom-modified Bonts (with grip tape on the toes), and switch back and forth a few times. Total of three efforts in each shoe&mdash;six efforts total. I&rsquo;ll switch every effort and just look at the data and see if it teases anything out.</p>
<p data-start="871" data-end="1026">I&rsquo;ve got Wahoo power pedals on, my Roam 3 on the bars. Everything&rsquo;s paired and ready to rock. We&rsquo;ll see what happens. Stay tuned for some tasting of blood.</p>

<h2 data-start="1033" data-end="1095">Quick notes mid-test: back-to-back differences show up fast</h2>
<p data-start="1097" data-end="1487">After a couple efforts, I&rsquo;m going to do another lap with the Lore. I might need to extend my recovery window a bit because I made a crucial error in my calculations: I forgot that at 3:30 is pickup on Thursdays, which means our entire street becomes annihilated with moms and dads and kids and doors and dogs and scooters and all the things. So I&rsquo;m going to do a little jumbo recovery loop.</p>
<p data-start="1489" data-end="1827">So far I feel like things are going pretty well. I was a little concerned because it&rsquo;s not like I do this type of training that much these days. I&rsquo;m not a track guy anymore. This stuff was pretty common when I was trying to win world championships on the track, but I&rsquo;m 53 now, live at altitude, and I&rsquo;m not doing a lot of this right now.</p>
<p data-start="1829" data-end="2128">One practical note: if you get the Lore Watts (the high-top version) and you try to get them on without a shoehorn, you can do it, but it&rsquo;s like putting on a really aggressive alpine ski boot. It takes about 45 seconds of wriggling. The shoehorn lets you slide the heel right in. Total game changer.</p>
<p data-start="2130" data-end="2201">Then I put the Bonts on back to back and the differences are immediate.</p>

<h2 data-start="2208" data-end="2264">My shoe-fit philosophy (and why back-to-back matters)</h2>
<p data-start="2266" data-end="2471">I tell people all the time in my fit studio: when they ask me what shoe they should buy, the answer is <strong data-start="2369" data-end="2403">the one that fits you the best</strong>. I don&rsquo;t know which brand that is because your foot is not my foot.</p>
<p data-start="2473" data-end="2724">The best way to figure it out is to try on as many shoes as possible, ideally back to back in the same session. Put in whatever insole you actually use (assuming it fits properly), and try them all on back to back. The differences become really clear.</p>
<p data-start="2726" data-end="3251">It&rsquo;s like shopping for gray paint. At first they all look similar, but if you stare at them for 60 to 90 seconds, the nuance comes out&mdash;the undertones come out. That&rsquo;s what you&rsquo;re trying to do with a cycling shoe: figure out how well the heel cup fits, where the boas are hitting you, whether the tongue is a wrap design or a centralized tongue. Those have different impacts on fit. For me, a wrap tongue is definitely better. For some people, a centralized tongue is better. Depends on who you are and what your foot is like.</p>

<h2 data-start="3258" data-end="3307">The test conditions and how I rode the efforts</h2>
<p data-start="3309" data-end="3452">I&rsquo;m not really looking at power during these efforts. I&rsquo;m not looking at metrics or trying to game metrics at all. I&rsquo;m just going up this hill.</p>
<p data-start="3454" data-end="3873">It&rsquo;s a very smooth street. No wind at all&mdash;zero&mdash;and barely a cloud in the sky. Pretty stunning, and a little frightening for February. I&rsquo;m lighting it up from the crosswalk to the top of the hill every lap. I start them at the same crosswalk. My approach speed has been quite similar. I stand up, then sit, then stand at the end when cadence starts to bog because the grade ramps up. It&rsquo;s a nice little ramp to infinity.</p>
<p data-start="3875" data-end="4087">I&rsquo;m not trying to pace these except to be consistent. Honestly, I&rsquo;m kind of just pacing these like an idiot: hit the button, rip it, front-load the effort, and go as fast as I can without much thought for pacing.</p>

<h2 data-start="4094" data-end="4156">What the numbers showed (and the pattern that surprised me)</h2>
<p data-start="4158" data-end="4336">When I sat down and looked at the files, the overall power differences were small at first&mdash;close enough that you could call one a tie. But what got interesting was the <strong data-start="4326" data-end="4335">trend</strong>.</p>
<p data-start="4338" data-end="4478">Looking at the three Bont efforts, the numbers went down each time&mdash;something like 481, then 474, then 464. Losing roughly 10 watts each rep.</p>
<p data-start="4480" data-end="4611">Looking at the three Lore efforts (not counting the warm-up), the numbers went up each time&mdash;something like 484, then 492, then 496.</p>
<p data-start="4613" data-end="4828">So that&rsquo;s fascinating: I got better every time I used the Lores. I got worse every time I used the Bonts, in every consecutive effort. I&rsquo;m looking at this data for the first time and thinking out loud as I say this.</p>
<p data-start="4830" data-end="5174">And I think this is indicative of how people should think about performance gains. People usually think: I put on a new thing&mdash;shoes, saddle, fit change&mdash;and my power over a duration goes up. That&rsquo;s possible. But a more subtle and real improvement can be <strong data-start="5083" data-end="5097">durability</strong>: better repeatability of high intensity over the stretch of a race or event.</p>
<p data-start="5176" data-end="5384">In this case, the data suggests a step beyond that. Not only were the efforts more repeatable with the Lores, they actually got better. My best effort of the day was late in the session, which is interesting.</p>
<p data-start="5386" data-end="5600">Now, it&rsquo;s a tiny data set. N of one. Bro science, basement science. So take it for what it is. But it&rsquo;s interesting that as I fatigued, the Bont looked less productive, while the Lore output held and even improved.</p>

<h2 data-start="5607" data-end="5668">A fair concern: &ldquo;last rep effect&rdquo; and how I&rsquo;d test it next</h2>
<p data-start="5670" data-end="5925">One thing occurring to me is the &ldquo;last rep effect.&rdquo; You get to the last rep and you&rsquo;re like, &ldquo;All right, I&rsquo;m done with the workout. I can dig deeper because I know there&rsquo;s nothing after this.&rdquo; That&rsquo;s how the human psyche works, even if we try to avoid it.</p>
<p data-start="5927" data-end="6134">So the next logical step would be to swap the order. Next time, start with the Bonts and finish with the Lores&mdash;or finish with the Bonts&mdash;so if there&rsquo;s a last-rep push, it doesn&rsquo;t automatically favor one shoe.</p>
<p data-start="6136" data-end="6265">Also, I&rsquo;ll have some natural compensation next time because I&rsquo;ll have more confidence doing six reps like this without exploding.</p>

<h2 data-start="6272" data-end="6330">What I think is happening (subjective feel + mechanics)</h2>
<p data-start="6332" data-end="6579">Subjectively, the Lore feels like it helps capture power in more parts of the pedal stroke. It feels like I can connect with the pedal with less effort. It captures power across a broader range of degrees, both in the saddle and out of the saddle.</p>
<p data-start="6581" data-end="6908">And to be clear: some people think a cuffed shoe is going to prevent dorsiflexion&mdash;kicking your toes up. That&rsquo;s not what&rsquo;s happening. The cuff captures energy here and here so you have freedom to dorsiflex, but you drive over the front of the pedal stroke without interfering with the tendons moving the way they&rsquo;re supposed to.</p>
<p data-start="6910" data-end="7111">We want to capture the force produced at the foot without restricting movement. That&rsquo;s tricky. It requires knowing where to capture and where to allow movement&mdash;and that&rsquo;s where I think the shoe shines.</p>

<h2>Color, Introduction, &amp; First Impressions</h2>
<p>&ldquo;Alright, Neil, you've got those shoes in front of you again. This is the third time. What's going on? Have they got a white version yet?&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;They do have a white version, yes. Let's get that cat out of the bag before we go anywhere. These are prototypes which have been sent to me for testing. So they printed them in black for me, but they do have white.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;You like black, don't you?&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Oh, not really. I'd much prefer white.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Oh, would you now?&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Yeah, white is definitely faster.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>The LoreThree</h2>
<p>&ldquo;But look, the black ones do really well. This is the LoreThree. So this is the latest version of the Lore shoe range from Drake Labs in the United States. These guys are sort of a multinational conglomeration, I guess, of experts who have been producing these.</p>
<p>This is a completely 3D-printed custom-made shoe. So we take a three-dimensional scan of your feet using a depth-sensing camera, and then we send it off to the guys, and they print the shoe.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Scanning &amp; Custom Fit</h2>
<p>&ldquo;I believe they're actually working on a scanner that you can use with your camera phone. But ideally, what we would use is a proper depth-sensing camera, which I'm going to scan your feet later&hellip; ideally, we would use that to get you the most accurate scan possible so that they fit perfectly.</p>
<p>And why do they need to be custom-made? Because they are easily the stiffest shoe in the world ever made.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Construction &amp; Materials</h2>
<p>&ldquo;They are ridiculous. They are so stiff. These are made with carbon fiber struts, and the top is made out of TPU&hellip; They've gone with a more flexible TPU around the toe box, so plenty of movement around the toes.&rdquo;</p>
<p>And you'll notice, compared to the LoreTwo, a strap system. So they've got&hellip; this is the Watts &mdash; they call this one the high-cut version &mdash; which has got a really interesting high design here with these two medial and dorsal pads across the front of the ankle joint.&rdquo;</p>
<p>The top strap cinches these down onto the front of your ankle joint, and that's where most of the power transfer comes from that's so different with this shoe compared to a regular shoe.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Heel Cup &amp; Power Transfer</h2>
<p>&ldquo;So your foot is kind of cinched back into this extraordinarily rigid heel cup, which is perfectly molded to your foot, and it basically stabilizes your foot through the back half of the ankle joint.&rdquo;</p>
<p>When you get out of the seat and yank on the pedal, there is absolutely no forward give of your foot inside the shoe, where there would be typically with a typical flexible-tongue shoe. And this is where a lot of the power transfer improvements come from with these.&rdquo;<br /><br /></p>
<h2>Strap System vs Boa</h2>
<p>&ldquo;My early thoughts when they went to the strap system, I really wasn't sure about this. The old version, the LoreTwo, had a pair of Boas. This is actually better.</p>
<p>It is a little bit harder initially when you put them on to fine-tune the exact pressure from the straps&hellip; but once you get them nailed down, and you usually do that in the first minute of your ride or so, it is a better system. It is much lighter and it's much more aerodynamic.&rdquo;</p>
<p></p>
<h2>Price</h2>
<p>&ldquo;Before you keep going, I have to ask you about the price&hellip; how much are they worth?&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;Yeah, they're not cheap. I think the guys are finalizing the pricing as we speak, but I think they're around&hellip; the top-shelf one, the carbon one, about $1,600. And the ones below that are a little bit cheaper again.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Watts vs. Legend Pro</h2>
<p>&ldquo;So if you go with a low-cut, the Legend Pro, this is actually my favorite one. Generally speaking, it's a little bit more comfortable for me than this one. If you've got demand for absolute maximum power transfer under all circumstances, the Watts &mdash; this one &mdash; the high-cut version &mdash; this is the best.&rdquo;</p>
<p></p>
<h2>Power Gains</h2>
<p>&ldquo;We've done a lot of testing on these. I've tested mine extensively versus other pairs of shoes that I've got, including some Bont Vapors and some Lakes and that sort of stuff. Generally speaking, what I'm seeing is a 50 to 70-watt power increase in my maximal sprint.</p>
<p>I struggle to crack 1,000 watts, but there's no way I can crack 1,000 watts in my Bonts or my Lakes. But with this shoe, in particular the high-cut version, I can do it fairly repeatedly. For me, it's about a 6% or 7% peak power increase, and over a 30-second effort&hellip; I'm seeing increases in my 30-second power of about 40 or 50 watts, typically, which is quite a lot.&rdquo;</p>
<h2>Value Compared to Other Upgrades</h2>
<p>&ldquo;Yes, people spend $2,000 on a set of carbon wheels for performance gain, sometimes more. So that's how people should be looking at these&hellip; I think this is a better investment than a similarly priced pair of carbon wheels. I think you'll get more out of these than you will out of the carbon wheel for the same price. They are that good.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Fit Algorithm</h2>
<p>&ldquo;An amazing piece of technology. And just a refinement of the LoreTwo. These guys have been working on the fit algorithm a lot over the last couple of years or so, and they have just nailed them.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Stack Height &amp; Aerodynamics</h2>
<p>&ldquo;The stack height of the shoe is so low that I can actually run my seat six millimeters lower than I typically do. When my seat goes down six mil, there's a little bit of an aerodynamic advantage associated with that. But yeah, the main thing is the power transfer. It is unbelievable. They are crazy stiff.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Rider Symmetry</h2>
<p>&ldquo;There's two components&hellip; One of them is the fit. If you've got really unusual feet &mdash; a hammer toe or a clawed toe or a bunion &mdash; it doesn't matter. The shoe is printed around your foot. So if you've got a weird foot, that doesn't matter because we just print the shoe around your foot.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;And the second one is the complex at the back of the shoe &mdash; those dorsal and medial pads and the ultra stiff heel cup. Probably one in every three clients comes through with a major asymmetrical movement pattern on the bike&hellip; This shoe&hellip; seems to remove all of that because the whole ankle joint is held rigidly through this rear cup system.&rdquo;</p>
<p>&ldquo;When I wear these, I feel significantly more symmetrical on the bike.&rdquo;</p>

<h2>Final Thoughts</h2>
<p>&ldquo;Yeah, fantastic product. It's been five years in the making, and I think this is going to be their final iteration. I believe the guys might be bringing out some cheaper variants of these in the next couple of months to a lower price point, but they are just fantastic. Really highly recommend this product. Not cheap, as you say, but in terms of the upgrades that I see people spending thousands of dollars on their bike with, this has got to be right at the top of the list for me.&rdquo;</p>

Although materials and fastening systems have changed, the basic design concept is still anchored in outdated concepts of applying running biomechanics to cycling, coupled with Italian dress shoe design looks.  This design approach works well for some, is adequate and accepted by many, and is a source of diminished riding joy and performance for others.</p><p>There has been more change in the “shoe to bike” interface (<a href="https://fitkitsystems.com/a-guide-to-bike-pedal-systems/">pedal systems</a>) than the “foot to shoe” interface. Think about it for a moment – the primary transfer point of biological energy to mechanical energy is the shoe, and significant energy is lost at this transfer interface. In addition, those losses are magnified by any reduction in pedaling forces to cope with discomfort in the feet like painful pressure points, hot feet, foot numbness, overheating, and shoes that are simply the wrong shape and too tight or loose. Complaints about cycling shoes are numerous, and there has not been sufficient innovation to adequately address all the problems, until now.</p><p>A convergence of bio-mechanical research and insights, coupled with engineering advancements in software, material science, and 3D and robotic printing has enabled a fresh take on what a cycling shoe is and how it performs. Enter the LoreOne, a 3D Printed Custom Cycling Shoe. This shoe has been under development for over 3 years and is now available. Lore has thrown everything at this project, harnessing an enormous amount of intellectual effort from a talented multidisciplinary team to reinvent the cycling shoe and how it is made in a quest for the best shoe possible.</p><p>I’ve been involved with the development of the LoreOne  for over 3 years now, contributing as a bike fit advisor and product tester, along with bike fitter and coach <a href="https://www.colbypearce.com/">Colby Pearce</a>.  As a bike fitter, I’ve provided awareness and input on the multitude of issues cyclists experience with their feet and cycling shoes, observations about current cycling shoe designs, and thoughts on <a href="https://fitkitsystems.com/cycling-cleat-positioning-and-adjustments/">cleat placement</a> and pedaling techniques.</p><p>As a multidisciplinary masters cyclist and racer and LoreOne product tester, I’ve logged more miles in the LoreOne than any other tester, reporting on feel and function through side-by-side comparisons (different shoes on different feet), power testing, and training and racing on road and gravel.</p><p>As a cyclist, I’ve had my own share of foot issues in cycling shoes, resulting in unnecessary pain and suffering, lost time, and missed podiums. As a fitter, I’ve had a good understanding of the issues and also sought assistance from other fitters to help resolve my own feet problems (shoe problems really – my feet are fine). The LoreOne is a game changer, offering up the holy grail of both unparalleled comfort and high performance. They also feel completely different compared to anything else I have worn to pedal a bicycle.</p><ul>
<li><strong>Breakthrough #1: Completely Customized to You.</strong> They are designed to fit whatever your foot shape is, not someone else’s idea of what your foot shape is. And my foot shape is at odds with what almost every other shoe designer thinks it should be. The fundamental issue underlying my own foot problems while cycling has been the shape of the shoes. For me, typical cycling shoes put pressure in the wrong places, causing painful “hot feet”.  The LoreOne has completely eliminated those problems. The LoreOne fits like a glove.  This is due to two things: the shoe is built off a scan of the the cyclist’s feet, and then the fit is finessed through the selection and heat molding of pads inside the shoe.  The result is a shoe absolutely form fitted to the feet, with support in the appropriate places so there is no foot slop in the shoe, but nor is there any pressure where it is not needed.  There is a feeling of a very uniform and yet active and positive hold on the foot.</li><li><strong>Breakthrough #2: Energy capture and force transfer</strong>. There are some sophisticated biomechanical explanations for how they capture and transfer energy, but I will keep it simple by describing them as an <strong>exoskeleton for your feet</strong>. In part, they allow for more of the power generated by your large muscles to get to the pedal, and in part, they are capturing more of your ankle articulation and driving that force to the pedal as well. The increased force transfer is particularly noticeable in short accelerations to close a gap or attack out of a group.  While it is very easy to get used to the completely different feel of riding in the LoreOne, what is hard is riding in “normal” cycling shoes again. <h2>The design difference between a barefoot shoe and a custom LoreOne.</h2><p>It’s well established that barefoot style shoes allow for a number of foot health and athletic performance benefits over traditional shoe lasts. Barefoot shoes are generally wider and offer more anatomically shaped toe box designs that impinge less on the natural design and function of the foot. A less constrained design equates to better central nervous system response, as well as better balance and stronger muscular change engagement.&nbsp;</p><p>The problem is that in many barefoot designed shoes, the foot can often swim in a shoe that is too wide for the user which in turn forces a negative nervous system reaction: the body is faced with the problem of trying to find grip both within the shoe AND with the ground itself. This facilitates over-engagement of stabilizer muscles-- an inefficient use of energy and inefficient force transfer. </p><p>Enter the custom nature of the Morphic algorithm and its importance to the evolution of footwear design and performance. The LoreOne’s footbed perfectly cups the perimeter of the user’s foot because it’s built 100% custom. Beyond Barefoot

<p><img src="https://store-pqcep6tgku.mybigcommerce.com/product_images/uploaded_images/image-9-.png"></p><p>Perfect fit and athletic performance are inextricably linked. Footwear must enable both perfect balance and force transfer. In my mind, these things are non-negotiable.  If footwear is not custom built around the individual foot with biomechanics in mind, balance and force transfer are inevitably compromised to various degrees. Further, the entry point to a special place in human experience is closed off (more on that lower down).  Serially produced, conventional footwear is always a compromise no matter your foot size and shape. The degree of compromise becomes more and more extreme as one’s feet deviate further and further from the “average” lasts that serially produced shoes are derived from.</p><p>I am obsessed with the fusion between athletes and their equipment. The interest is for lack of a better word, spiritual.  The goal is to have the line between body and equipment blur to the point that mind no longer distinguishes the separating line between the two. When that state of seamless fusion occurs, it’s among the most powerful experiences found living on earth, and therefore should be cultivated. Both selfishly and for the sake of our collective humanity, we should strive to experience this fusion as much as possible. Gear/Body/Mind fusion enables what the zeitgeist currently calls “flow states”.  It’s simple:  if the footwear is uncomfortable or impedes on the body’s ability to efficiently transfer energy, the mind is constantly bothered by that separation during the activity–– “flow” becomes difficult––- the wholesome bliss of unified peak performance is rendered impossible. An ill-fit, serially produced piece of footwear is akin to a fly that is constantly buzzing around your head and landing on your face while eating a meal. You can eat, but it’s hard to enjoy your food. </p><p>I was drawn into this realm of design largely as a result of my own feet.  They are a big, clubish affair that feature a wide forefoot,  a high instep, and a loose fascial structure (meaning that my feet move dynamically with a ton of displacement during athletic activities). You put these monsters in any footwear that was designed to look like an Italian loafer, and the result is massive constricting pressure on the fat pads and the restriction on dynamic pronation which shuts down the nervous system and inhibits balance. This is all very bad. </p><p>So, when we say custom fit, it’s not a glove fit. It’s not about building a plaster cast of the foot and simply mimicking its shape and perimeter. This approach is indeed “custom” but not functionally helpful, because the feet NEED to move within footwear to achieve balance and efficient force transfer. Again the footwear must have both ultimate comfort and force transfer for its user to enter the gates of bliss.  When we say custom, we are talking about creating a structure that is completely relieved where it needs to be (your fat pads, toes, and medial pronation zone), but interacts closely with your foot at “cardinal points”–– a set of fixed locations where we want to cultivate constant interaction between the exoskeleton and the foot for maximal force transfer. Years of tedious work have yielded a highly complex digital “fit algorithm” that balances these two needs in harmony and is scalable to any foot shape and size. </p><p>So, for my foot, in the LoreOne you can see that my first metatarsal bone is snug up against the shell. <h2>The Athlete:</h2><p>John Higgins is the ‘<a href="https://bikefitr.com" target="_blank">Bike Fitr</a>’. Based in Salt Lake City, John has a  deep commitment to his trade; he produces and sells his own bike fitting equipment while also running a thriving  fitting studio practice.  As a racer himself, John competes in multiple disciplines and has an intimate understanding of the biomechanical and fit challenges cyclists face with conventional footwear.&nbsp;</p><h2>Peak Watts:</h2><p>In his LoreOne Power Test, John’s average peak watts increased a phenomenal 20.13% over his conventional pair of Lake shoes. <h2>This simple test offers a plethora of fascinating insights 
into the LoreOne’s superior pedaling efficiency.</h2><p>
	Anyone who has tried the LoreOne notices the immediate difference in power delivery and pedal efficiency versus conventional shoes. It only takes a couple of pedal strokes. The LoreOne captures more biomechanical input from the rider and translates it directly to the pedal resulting in more watts, more speed, less dead spots, and better pedaling technique.&nbsp;</p><p>
	While it's experientially self-evident, we have searched for the best method and protocol to quantify these gains into a scalable test format that athletes can employ and repeat on a home trainer using commonly used power meter pedals and head units. (The Garmin Cycling Dynamics data platform paired with Assioma Duo or Garmin Vector/Rally pedals provide a great platform for collection as well as viewing pedaling efficiency metrics).&nbsp;</p><p>The LoreOne Power Protocol specifies multiple maximal efforts that are averaged to smooth data outliers and fatigue as the intervals progress.&nbsp;</p><p>After trialing different test protocol formats, the most consistent test emerged as a protocol of 6x60sec maximal effort intervals: 3x with the LoreOne and 3x with the tester’s conventional shoes alternating between each pair of shoes and incorporating 15 min rest phases between each effort that include low resistance recovery spinning.&nbsp;</p><p>This simple test offers a plethora of fascinating insights into the LoreOne’s superior pedaling efficiency. For the first 30 seconds of the test, the big takeaway is that the higher the effort, the bigger the advantage the LoreOne imparts to its owner. Generally, the data in the first 15 seconds of these efforts demonstrate significant increases in peak power, the ability to sustain peak power for longer periods, and to create significantly faster acceleration (time to peak watts). Translated to the road + track, we know we will be able to accelerate out of corners faster, sprint faster, create gaps on breakaways, chase breakaways, and dominate track starts.</p><p><img src="https://store-pqcep6tgku.mybigcommerce.com/product_images/uploaded_images/power-protocol-graphics-google-slides-mozilla-firefox-2023-02-03-at-11.22.01-am.jpeg"></p><h5>Fig. 1 - LoreOne peak watts and acceleration gains.</h5><p>Testing the longer duration aerobic energy system efficiency is hard to do in a home environment–– to achieve anything meaningful would require many long controlled intervals (60 min) spaced too far apart, over too many days, to be scalable for athletes and testers without interrupting normal training. Aerobic efficiency is best tested in a laboratory using metabolic markers like lactate, heart rate and regional muscle oxygenation. Interestingly, the last 45 seconds of the standard 60 sec Lore glycolytic power protocol (after the initial sprint burst is completed), seems to act as a crude proxy for the metabolic efficiency gains seen during longer aerobic efforts. I.e. The gain over conventional shoes is not as large as the often 10-20% improvements seen in the first 15 seconds of max intensity, but equally massive in terms of impact on overall riding performance when hypothetically stretched out over time: generally 4-9%,and sometimes more! These numbers corroborate the experiential feedback from Lore riders who consistently report substantially lower overall perceived exertion when using the LoreOne on longer, primarily aerobic efforts.</p><p><img src="https://store-pqcep6tgku.mybigcommerce.com/product_images/uploaded_images/image-2023-02-03-at-12.09.20-pm.jpeg"></p><h5>Fig. 2 - LoreOne FTP gains proxy</h5><p>A 7th bonus interval can be added to demonstrate the pedaling efficiency of the LoreOne versus conventional shoes in a head-to-head test where the rider wears a LoreOne on one foot and their conventional shoe on the other. This effort can be a simple, sub-maximal (80%-100% of FTP) 2-5 min interval. The goal is to leverage Garmin’s Cycling Dynamics data to directly highlight the contrast in overall powerphase arc length and early pedal stroke initiation evident in the LoreOne vs. conventional cycling shoes. </p><p><img src="https://store-pqcep6tgku.mybigcommerce.com/product_images/uploaded_images/image-2023-02-03-at-12.12.38-pm.jpeg"></p><h5>Fig. 3 - LoreOne Power Phase initiation</h5><p><img src="https://store-pqcep6tgku.mybigcommerce.com/product_images/uploaded_images/image-2023-02-03-at-12.13.26-pm.jpeg"></p><h5>Fig. 4 - LoreOne Power Phase Termination</h5><p>In summary, this protocol is not the end-all, definitive picture of the LoreOne's magic. Rather, it’s designed to be a scalable and easy to perform test that produces consistent proof-of-life results across a broad group of subjects. After testing a range of athletes, we feel confident that it can offer a meaningful glimpse into the significant efficiency and power transmission improvements that the LoreOne brings to the cyclist or coach looking to maximize overall cycling performance.&nbsp;</p><p>Happy Testing!</p>

<h2>The Athlete:</h2><p>Alex Yokubison is a 23 year old amateur racer based in Salt Lake City. He races&nbsp;criteriums, and road at a Cat 3 level. <li>-Wear shorts, or roll up pants to your knees.</li><li>-Stand shoulder width apart.</li><li>-Get into an athletic stance and imagine someone is throwing a basketball at you to engage a “ready” but relaxed position that you can maintain for a few minutes at a time.</li><li>-Have the scanner check that your achilles are straight up and down and that your feet are in a neutral, non-collapsed position. Make corrections as necessary.  Feel a sense of even weight all over your feet, front to back and side-to-side. Balance weight from your heels to your metatarsal bones. Even weight across your metatarsal bones is a good indicator of neutrality.  Make corrections to get your feet into a neutral position.</li><li>-It’s very important that your toes are in a relaxed position during the scan despite your athletic position–don’t clench them.</li><li>-Hold very still while being scanned.</li></ul><h2>Scanning:</h2><ul>
</ul><ul>
<li>-Sit on a small stool, crouch, or kneel in front of the scanee.</li><li>-Start by scanning the right foot.</li><li>-Reach one arm on either side of the right leg to hold the phone behind the heel of the scanee with the screen facing you.</li><li>-You will always hold the phone along the edges so you don’t cover the camera</li><li>-Position the phone at a 30 degree angle and about 8”/20cm above the scanning surface and also about 8/20cm behind the heel. In the screen you will see the heel/ankle/as well as the ground surface.</li><li>-We will start our scan here.</li><li>-The most important part of the process is to move extremely slowly and smoothly throughout the whole process. This allows for the camera to track the shape of the foot accurately and avoids any imperfections in scan quality.&nbsp;</li></ul><h2>Submitting your scan:</h2><ul>

<li>-Export scans as a GLB file and email them to scans@lore.cc</li><li>-Scan files should be re-named to your name and which foot you are scanning (e.g.John_Doe_Left</li><li>-In the email subject line include your name and order number</li></ul><h2>Troubleshooting potential issues and solutions:</h2><p>-Phone vibrates and loses tracking:</p><ul>
</ul><ul>
<li>-If the phone vibrates it is losing tracking. This means you should be moving slower. Often you can recover from a loss of tracking by moving backwards a few inches to a previously scanned part of the foot.</li><li>-Make sure you are holding the phone at least 8” above the foot and pointing it down–the camera will track better if it is rotating around the foot from above.</li><li>-Check your lighting: scanning works best in a bright, evenly lit space. Shadows or dim lighting both make for challenging scans.</li><li>-Every time you transition to a new surface of the foot–– i.e from the inside to the front/top it’s very important that you go extra slowly and smoothly. The smooth/careful transitions between new surfaces are where great scans are made.</li><li>-Unrecoverable tracking is marked by intense vibration and the image on the screen visibly shaking and distorted. Try going back a few inches or centimeters to where you came from and hold the phone steady to recover tracking. If it doesn’t work, and things don’t settle down, abort the scan and start again.</li></ul><ul>

<p><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-weight: normal;"></span></p></h2><h2>Getting In and Out:</h2><p>The LoreTwo is more difficult to get into than a traditional cycling shoe. This is a small tradeoff for increased power transfer and pedal stroke drive. To make the process easier, loosen both Atop dials to the maximum, and grab both Dorsal Power Panels with your thumbs spreading them maximally before sliding your foot in. Once in, gently kick your heel against the ground to properly seat the heel in the custom heel pocket.</p><p><span style="font-family: Helvetica; font-weight: normal;"><br></span><span style="font-family: Helvetica;"></span></p><h2><br><br>CLEATS:</h2><h2>Fore/Aft Cleat Position:</h2><p>Your cleat holes have been placed to perfectly bisect the longitudinal distance between your unique 1st and 5th metatarsal bones. If you start with your cleats in this position it typically melds well with the LoreTwo’s design. Most riders are instantly happy here, but please feel free to experiment. While there is a trend in traditional cycling shoes toward more rearward and mid-foot cleat positions, the LoreTwo  produces more engagement via a longer lever arm when cleats are farther forward. If you experiment beyond your nominal custom cleat position, seek to find a balance in your pedal stroke where you feel a gentle firing and pulse of the calf muscles on the downstroke. Too far forward and the calves will become too engaged and fatigue over time. When cleats are too far backwards, the pedal stroke tends to feel wooden and dead as the calf pulse is no longer recruited.<br> </p><h2>Lateral/Medial Cleat Position:</h2><p>Because the LoreTwo has a “pronation pocket” on the medial (inside) aspect of the shoe, the LoreTwo is wider in the inside ankle area than conventional shoes. Your cleat holes have been positioned according to your anatomy to balance an optimal foot/pedal relationship while accounting for potential crank interference issues.  However, because this nominal setting is pushed to the limit to encourage optimal foot/pedal alignment, some minor adjustment may be necessary based on each individual rider’s  biomechanics. Do you pedal with your heel in a neutral position or in or out, for example?  If you are experiencing any crank interference issues, please adjust your cleat position farther toward the medial or inside of the shoe to create the necessary clearance. If you are experiencing interference, you may only need 1mm or 2mm of medial cleat adjustment to clear the problem.</p><h2><br><br>Atop Cable Tensioning: </h2><p>Atop cables are designed to be tightened and micro-adjusted by turning them clockwise and released by turning counterclockwise. There is no micro-adjust to loosen the dials.</p><h2><br><br>1st Metatarsal Pad Options:</h2><p>Your shoes ship with preinstalled 2mm first metatarsal pads. Start here, ride the shoe. If for any reason you feel like the metatarsal width could be reduced to feel more connected and snug to rigid the 1st Metatarsal wall, you can experiment by trying the optional 4mm pad. Switching to the 4mm pad will make the forefoot feel more snug across its width. These are non-rigid supports designed to cue your mind and nervous system to fire and contract the muscles of the feet during the power phase of the pedal stroke. When the foot is activated, there is harmony firing the rest of the bigger muscles up the skeletal chain. </p><p>The arches pre-installed in your shoe are a reflection of your arch shape, but may need additional positional tuning– either in arch size or position relative to the plantar shell  to suit you perfectly. Your own nervous system and movement patterns will dictate personal preference. </p><h2><br><br>Positional Tuning:</h2><p>If you remove the footbed you will see the arches pre-installed and located with a pin system that integrates into the plantar shell. The arch can be moved both fore/aft and medially/laterally. </p><h2><br><br>Height Tuning: </h2><p>An extra set of arches is also included in your parts bag. These patent-pending devices transfer upper dorsal energy from your body to the pedal. </p><p>Every mid cut shoe ships with three sets of custom power panels made specifically for your feet. The difference between each panel setup is the amount of offset, or distance from your foot to the panel. Shoes are built from a static scan of your foot––it’s impossible to account for all the factors related to bike fit, movement patterns, past injuries, etc. </p><p>The panels can be tuned to optimize the perfect blend of comfort and power production. The closer the panel is to your ankles, the more immediate the power and pedaling efficiency will be. The farther the panels are away from your foot, the more comfortable the shoe will feel. </p><p>Mid cut shoes ship with the middle of the three panel options installed, marked MAIN.</p><p>Once you try your shoes, feel and mentally connect to each of your four ankles. Is there adequate pressure and connection? Are your ankles connecting to the pads and panels to a degree that you feel the increased power and drive at the top of the pedal stroke? Are any of the four ankles uncomfortable?</p><p>If you feel connected and comfortable in any of the four locations, try to experiment to change the panels to the panel marked IN to see if you can comfortably tolerate more pressure to create more power. </p><p>If you feel persistent intolerable discomfort in any of the ankles, change the appropriate panel out to the one marked OUT, which will provide relief. Do not use solvents. </p><h2><br><br>FootBed Adjustment Period for Custom Textured Footbeds</h2><p>(These are an additional purchase) </p><p>When you first try your shoes, you will notice that the footbed is relatively hard and that the small textured bumps are stimulating the bottoms of your feet. If you haven’t spent a lot of time barefoot or in barefoot shoes, the first impression may not be “comfortable” in the traditional sense.  Most riders have been in overly padded shoes for their entire lives. Cushy insoles reduce the ability to transfer biomechanical power to the drivetrain and inhibit proprioception and proper muscle firing sequences.  Be patient. After a few rides, your feet will adjust and the benefits should become readily apparent while opening a new world of sensation and performance.&nbsp;<br></p><p>Thank you for choosing Lore.
